My tailor is my best friend. I barely know his last name and, although I've met his wife, I don't know if he has children. I know two things about him. He's an alterations genius and he's expensive.
Very few of us are perfect off-the-rack sizes. From your hips down you may be a 14, but your waist is a 12. Or, broad shoulders may take a size 8 to a size 14. Whatever your figure flaw, your clothes will always look better if you have them tailored. A good tailor will hem jeans so they look identical to the original hem, waist or legs .......just better. REALLY good tailors can remake a shoulder or a collar so that it looks perfect and no one will ever know it was once schizophrenic.......half fitting and half not. But be warned. This kind of a talent will run you some bucks........like $225 to tailor a two piece suit. But it's WELL worth it! Sure beats spending the $4000 a perfectly tailored suit will cost you!
I have several good tailors that I run to when my outfit needs a psychiatrist. These geniuses take the pleats out of slacks, shoulder pad out of leather jackets and shorten suit jackets so that they look like James Bond is wearing them. Wanna take a $500 suit and make it look better than custom made? Call me! I'll fit you with the right tailor who'll fit you with the right look which will make you look like THAT guy or THAT girl. You'll feel like you've added a new outfit to your closet and you'll once again be excited to wear it! The "proof is in the puddling, love" and that's why "trend" is today, but "style" is forever!
Have you ever looked at two women wearing the same outfit and thought,"oh, woman A looks so much better!" But you couldn't figure out why? This, my fabulous readers, is the essence of style.
Style means injecting yourself into an outfit. It's not just wearing the clothes-that's fashion. And it's not just about labels, or the expense, or the exact replication of something you saw Amal Clooney wearing. (BTW-I have a serious girl crush on her closet!). Style is putting together pieces so that they suit YOU. It's the little touches that make your style stand out.
Say, for example, I see two gals wearing jeans, colorblocked sweaters and boots-but one looks boring while the other one looks put together and stylish. What's the difference??
Well, the stylish gal had her jeans tailored so that they're a quarter inch off the ground. The other chick is wearing hers without hemming them and they're dragging on the ground. Stylish Samantha is wearing boots that have a stripe the color of her sweater. Plain Jane is wearing black boots that need new heels and a good polish. Plain Jane is also wearing her daily makeup with no lipstick, while our stylin' sister is rocking a bold pink lip. These are the things that take AN outfit and make it YOUR outfit!
Get what I mean? It's the little touches, the thought process that goes into picking accessories or makeup. It's you taking the time to slide on the cuff bracelet instead of going out bare-armed. It's YOU. So think about that next time you're dashing off to work in one of your "I don't have time to accessorize" outfits. Because you DO have time. You always have time to make "you" into "YOU"!
